Terpenes

Unlocking the Aromas

Exploring the Role of Terpenes in Cannabis and Beyond

Terpene’s are organic compounds that produce specific smells and tastes. They are found in cannabis, essential oils, plants, trees, and foods. In cannabis the terpenes help ward off attacks from animals, insects, and fungus during the growth cycle of the plant. When a cannabis plant goes through the curation process, the terpenes become oxidized resulting in what we know are terpenoids.

Terpenes have a range of potential medicinal properties, and work with cannabinoids to provide therapeutic relief to some patients. Together, they may create an “entourage effect” which is key to utilizing cannabis as a potential medicine. Every cannabis strain has varying percentages of terpene content – a diverse terpene profile may help impart a unique and significant sense of relief for various conditions.

Beta-caryophyllene is the only known terpene that can bind to cannabinoid receptors, specifically CB2 receptors. A 2017 study found that CB2 receptors play a role in dopamine production in mice. This may be why beta-caryophyllene could be a potential viable treatment for anxiety and stress. The activation of CB2 receptors by beta-caryophyllene may also reduce pain and inflammation.

Enjoy your terpenes, and remember, The Nose Knows!
