A Father’s Day Reflection on CBD, Stress, Sleep, and Whole-Person Wellness
Welcome to June. This month, we observe Father’s Day, Men’s Health Month, and Mental Health Month. These occasions provide a valuable opportunity to engage in a deeper conversation about the cornerstones of men’s well-being, including emotional resilience, physical vitality, and the importance of preventive wellness throughout every stage of life.
For generations, men were often taught to push through stress, suppress emotions, and prioritize productivity over self-care. Fortunately, that narrative is changing. More men are beginning to explore integrative approaches to wellness that support both body and mind, including nutrition, exercise, meditation, sleep optimization, plant medicine, and cannabinoid therapeutics.
At the center of this growing wellness conversation is the endocannabinoid system (ECS), one of the body’s most important regulatory networks. The ECS helps maintain homeostasis and influences mood, sleep, stress response, inflammation, immune function, appetite, pain perception, cognition, and emotional regulation (Di Marzo & Piscitelli, 2015). Phytocannabinoids such as CBD, CBG, and CBN interact with this system in ways that may help support resilience in the face of modern stressors.
As cannabis nurses, we see increasing numbers of men seeking alternatives to pharmaceuticals, alcohol, and chronic stress patterns. Many are looking for ways to feel better physically while also supporting emotional health, sleep, recovery, and mental clarity.
Cannabinoids are not a cure-all, but they may serve as valuable tools within a larger lifestyle medicine framework that includes movement, whole foods, stress reduction, meaningful connection, and restorative sleep.
Cardiovascular Health and Stress Reduction
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death among men. Sedentary lifestyle patterns, chronic stress, poor diet, sleep disruption, and metabolic dysfunction all contribute to cardiovascular risk.
Emerging research suggests CBD may offer supportive cardiovascular benefits through its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and vasorelaxant properties. In a randomized crossover study, CBD administration was associated with reduced resting blood pressure and blunted blood pressure responses to stress (Jadoon et al., 2017). Additional research suggests cannabinoids may influence vascular function and oxidative stress pathways that contribute to cardiovascular disease (Sultan et al., 2020).
Stress management is another critical component of cardiovascular wellness. Chronic activation of the stress response contributes to inflammation, hypertension, anxiety, poor sleep, and burnout. CBD appears to interact with serotonin 5-HT1A receptors and modulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which may help regulate stress responses and support emotional balance (Blessing et al., 2015).
THC requires a more cautious approach in cardiovascular care. While low doses may provide therapeutic effects for some individuals, higher doses can increase heart rate and provoke anxiety or tachycardia, especially in sensitive populations. As we often say in cannabis nursing: less is more.
Men’s Mental Health and Emotional Wellness
Mental health struggles among men are often underrecognized and undertreated. Anxiety, depression, trauma, emotional dysregulation, burnout, and sleep disorders affect countless men who may never openly discuss what they are experiencing.
Cannabinoids may offer supportive tools for emotional wellness when used thoughtfully and intentionally.
CBD has demonstrated anxiolytic potential in both preclinical and human studies and may help reduce anxiety, support relaxation, and improve sleep quality (Blessing et al., 2015; Moltke & Hindocha, 2021). Research also suggests CBD may reduce amygdala reactivity, helping regulate fear and trauma responses (Crippa et al., 2018).
For some individuals, carefully titrated low-dose THC may also support PTSD symptom management and emotional processing when used under appropriate guidance (Walsh et al., 2017). However, THC dosing matters greatly. Excessive or frequent THC use may contribute to dependence, mood disruption, cognitive impairment, or respiratory irritation when inhaled heavily over time. This is where education becomes essential. The goal is not intoxication or impairment. The goal is intentional therapeutic use that supports function, balance, and quality of life so you can live your best life.
Sleep, Recovery, and Physical Performance
Sleep disruption is one of the most common issues affecting men today. Work pressures, caregiving responsibilities, financial stress, technology overload, and chronic nervous system activation all interfere with restorative sleep.
CBD and CBN may support healthier sleep patterns by helping calm the nervous system, reduce anxiety, and support circadian rhythm regulation. CBN, an oxidized metabolite of THC, is often described as particularly relaxing and may help support nighttime unwinding and sleep initiation.
Physical recovery is another important area where cannabinoids may play a role. CBD is widely recognized for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties and is increasingly used by athletes and active adults to support recovery, soreness reduction, and mobility.
Emerging literature also suggests cannabinoids may contribute to musculoskeletal recovery and regenerative medicine applications (Marques Azzini et al., 2023).
When paired with stretching, strength training, yoga, hydration, mindfulness, and anti-inflammatory nutrition, cannabinoids may help support healthy aging, mobility, and performance longevity.
Prostate Health and Healthy Aging
As men age, prostate health becomes increasingly important. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer remain common concerns affecting quality of life and sexual wellness.
Preclinical research suggests cannabinoids may exhibit anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative effects relevant to prostate health (Nikan et al., 2016). While human clinical trials are still limited, the evolving science is encouraging and warrants continued investigation.
Healthy aging is not simply about avoiding disease. It is about maintaining vitality, cognitive clarity, emotional connection, mobility, and purpose throughout the lifespan.
California Sober and Reducing Alcohol Dependence
An increasing number of adults are embracing what is often called the “California Sober” lifestyle, reducing or eliminating alcohol while incorporating mindful cannabinoid use into wellness routines.
Many individuals report that CBD helps reduce social anxiety, improve sleep, support relaxation, and decrease alcohol cravings. Preclinical research has even suggested CBD may reduce alcohol consumption behaviors and protect against alcohol-related neurotoxicity (Viudez-Martínez et al., 2018).
For men seeking alternatives to nightly alcohol use, cannabinoids may provide a gentler and potentially less harmful option when approached responsibly and intentionally.
A Nursing Perspective on Whole-Person Wellness
As we celebrate Father’s Day and Men’s Health Month, this is an opportunity to encourage men to prioritize their health without shame or stigma.
Healing does not always begin with a prescription. Sometimes it begins with better sleep, deeper conversations, stress reduction, movement, nourishment, nervous system support, and reconnecting with the body.
Cannabinoids may offer meaningful support along that journey when integrated thoughtfully into a broader wellness plan.

“Men, Fathers, and the Weight They Carry”
A Father’s Day Tribute for Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month
Roses are red, violets are blue,
Men carry burdens that few ever view.
Fathers and brothers, partners and sons,
Holding it down while the whole world runs.
They work through the pressure, the silence, the strain,
Smiling on the surface while masking the pain.
Taught to stay strong, to push it aside,
Even when exhaustion has nowhere to hide.
Between long days, hard choices, and trying to cope,
Many keep moving while running on hope.
Showing up daily, dependable and steady,
Even when mentally they are far from ready.
But beneath the armor and all they contain,
Lives a deep need to feel whole again.
A quiet reminder that strength can include,
Resting the mind and shifting the mood.
Plant medicine waiting, gentle and wise,
Helping some men finally exhale and unwind.
A tincture at night, a gummy for peace,
A small moment where the tension can release.
CBD for the stress, CBG for the brain,
Support for the body carrying invisible pain.
Not to escape, but to soften the load,
And find a little balance along the road.
For the fathers still learning as they go,
For the men who love deeply more than they show,
This is your reminder that healing is real,
And caring for yourself is not a weakness, but a skill.
Through Bloom Hemp CBD, we honor that space,
And the work is supported through Holistic Caring & The Green Nurse with grace.
Care that is thoughtful, informed, and true,
The kind of support built to walk beside you.
So here’s to the men who rise every day,
Who protects, who provides, who quietly stays.
Not perfect, not endless, just human and real,
Learning that care also means how you feel.
This Father’s Day and Men’s Mental Health Month,
May more conversations finally open up.
Because strength is not measured by how much you hide,
But by having the courage to care for what’s inside.
With Love,
Holistic Caring & The Green Nurse
